Shipley Do-Nuts employees causing economic crisis

I observed an odd customer employee interaction at Shipley Do-Nuts this morning. You can read the whole story here.
I went to Shipley Do-Nuts on Parmer in Cedar Park Texas to buy some of their delicious doughnuts this morning Sat May 2nd. I ordered my usual Bull's Eye and Boston cream filled. I always get a Bull's Eye because I never know when they'll be sold out. And if they were sold out of Bull's Eye's I would just substitute with some other delicious creation.
While I was ordering a lady walked into the store and asked one of the employees if they could order 30 sprinkle doughnuts for pick up later this morning at 11:30am. The employee took a quick peek at the kitchen area and replied that they were done cooking donuts for the day and the kitchen had been shut down. The customer asked "How many [sprinkle Do-Nuts] are on that tray over there." The employee went to one of the sprinkle sections and replied "12." The customer said "How many [sprinkle Do-Nuts] all together?" The employee counted them and said "30, but we need to keep a few."
The customer replied in dismay, "So you won't sell them all to me?" The employee said "Correct." The customer replied "That's Crazy! I guess I'll go to Round Rock Donuts."
The customer politely walked out of the store and another employee asked what just happened. And I replied, "Apparently Shipley Do-Nuts isn't in the business of selling donuts."
The only thing I can think of is that the sprinkle counting employee secretly eats' a few sprinkle's at the end of the shift and didn't want to sell all of them. It can't be that they want to keep a few on the shelf so they don't appear to be sold out. Doughnuts are perishable! I've been to Shipley Do-Nuts several times and there have been empty trays. I still order because I made the pilgrimage to the doughnut shop. I can't imagine that the owner or manager of the store would condone this kind of behavior from the employees. Shipley should be selling all the Do-Nut's they possibly can.

So, instead of selling 30, the employee sold 0 (barring what may have been sold later that morning). Good compromise. I'm curious how old / experienced the employee appeared. Had I been the customer I would have been at first flabberghasted, then outraged - until I remembered that there are other doughnuts in the dough. Does Shipley make ding-dong's? They seem to have hired one.

Chad,
I think the employee is younger than 20 years of age. I suspect she was operating from the handbook. I haven't been back since! |

And your refusal to return is a great example of your freedom of choice and by extension, free market economics.
