I was very surprised when I heard reports and saw photos of this very exotic looking bird at our feeder. A day or so later I saw this bird and then several days after that the female of the species visited us. I would have never expected this kind of bird to be in Central Texas but I guess they visit from Central America during the summer.
I found more information on the Painted Bunting AllAboutBirds.org. I suppose we should be thankful to have spotted this bird since it is conservation status is “Near Threatened.”
Answers.com says this about Painted Buntings: A small finch (Passerina ciris) of the southern United States and Mexico, the male of which has brilliant multicolored plumage. Also called nonpareil. And of course the Nonpareil is the name of the newspaper in Council Bluffs IA.
